(May 2019) The Comprehensive Child Wellness Assessment provided by the Adoption Medicine Clinic at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital is comprised of medical, developmental, and mental health screenings. This webinar will break down the components of the assessment and inform care givers on what they should expect at an appointment. The webinar will also offer advice from other caregivers on how to guide their child through the assessment, as well as provider insight on questions to ask.
Mary Jo Spencer, CPNP, APRN, MPH is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with University of Minnesota Physicians in the Foster Care Program of the Adoption Medicine Clinic, located in the Pediatric Specialty Care Discovery Clinic at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospitals and Clinics. Ms. Spencer provides clinical health care services, including Comprehensive Child Wellness Assessments, for children who have experienced foster care or prenatal exposures, with support of the MN Department of Human Services Foster Care Permanency Grant. Ms. Spencer has been clinical staff at University of Minnesota Physicians (UMP), assigned to the U of MN Department of Pediatrics, since 1996. Her clinical practice there has included primary health care for children and adolescents experiencing adoption, foster care, residential treatment, incarceration, homelessness, and out-of-home placements. She has provided onsite clinical education to pediatric medical residents, medical students, nurse practitioner students, and nursing students. She has presented locally, nationally, and internationally on the health of children who have experienced foster care, prenatal exposures, or other out-of-home placements, almost all of whom are impacted by early childhood adversity, stress, and emotional trauma. Concurrently, Ms. Spencer is also an independent contractor staffing with the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Diagnostic Clinic at the Proof Alliance (formerly known as Minnesota Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome – MOFAS) in St. Paul, MN.
