(May 2018)  When parents discover their child has an FASD, they often receive well intended by limited advice on “what to do.” FASD is a complex diagnosis and in many cases, the child has experienced trauma which changes the game. Parents soon discover that parenting a child with FASD and Trauma can be frustrating and exhausting. This workshop will help participants tap into their parenting strengths and discover how parenting responses can help or hinder a successful relationship with their child. The workshop will help participants understand how the “hot/cold” neurological systems are activated causing physical and psychological responses which affect both parent and child. Nine practical ideas will also be provided to help parents retool and improve their relationship with their child and prevent care-giver burnout.

Jeanne Ketola, MA LPCC, is a mental health professional at K.I.D.S & Family Therapy in Champlin, MN, specializing in helping adoptive families and children who have been affected by FASD, ASD and trauma. She also provides therapeutic services at St. David’s Center for Child and Family Development. Jeanne is the parent of three adopted children and has navigated the world of FASD and trauma for over 15 years as a parent, professional and national advocate. She is certified in Families Moving Forward which is a scientifically researched program for parents of children with an FASD; received the Permanency and Adoption Competency Certification from the University of Minnesota and recently completed a short study on the improvement of adaptive functioning in children with an FASD through the use of a multidimensional therapeutic approach. She collaborated with experts on a national level for the inclusion of FASD in the DSM 5. Jeanne was also recognized as an advocate by the National Organization for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and is listed in the Tom and Linda Daschle Hall of Fame for FASD.
